Imagine a World: The Magic Realism of Rob Gonsalves
Rob Gonsalves was a Canadian painter who created stunning works of magic realism, a style of painting where reality is mixed with magic. His paintings have an autobiographical, symbolic narrative that invites the viewer into his beautiful mind where alternative realities exist at the same time. His work is a visual, human experience of quantum theory's entangled spaces and time.
Gonsalves was born in Toronto in 1959 and showed an early interest in art. He was inspired by progressive rock album cover art and the surrealism of Salvador Dalàand René Magritte. He studied architecture at Ryerson Technical University and learned how to manipulate perspective, which became an important element in his paintings. He also attended the Ontario College of Art and Design for a year.
In 1990, he decided to pursue painting full-time after receiving an enthusiastic response at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. He exhibited his work at various art shows and galleries in North America and abroad. He also published four books featuring his paintings: Imagine a Night (2003), Imagine a Day (2004), Imagine a Place (2008), and Imagine a World (2015). The second book won him the Governor General's Award for Children's Literature – Illustration in 2005.
Gonsalves' paintings are characterized by seamless transitions between realistic and fantastical scenes, often involving optical illusions or paradoxes. He used acrylic paint on stretched canvas and usually took three to four months to complete a painting. His paintings are rich in detail, color, and symbolism, and often reflect his love of nature, architecture, music, and literature. Some of his recurring themes include flying, sailing, bridges, trees, books, and children.
Gonsalves suffered from mental illness and ended his life on June 14, 2017. He left behind a legacy of 167 original paintings that are in private collections around the world. His work continues to inspire and delight people of all ages who appreciate his unique vision and imagination.

His paintings often challenge the viewer's perception of reality and invite them to explore the hidden connections and possibilities in his scenes.
Gonsalves' paintings are not only visually stunning, but also emotionally engaging. He said that he wanted his paintings to evoke a sense of wonder and joy in the viewer, and to remind them of the magic that exists in life.
