The 12th of July (UPI) -July 12 (UPI) - Paper Bag Day, celebrated every year on the 12th of July, is the day that commemorates the anniversary of the inventor William Goodale patenting a paper bag machine in 1859.
The celebration commemorates June 12th, 1859, which was the day that Goodale received a patent for his machine that was designed to make paper bags.
Francis Wolle, patented the first machine for paper bags in 1852. However, Goodale's machine cut the paper into pieces that could fold into the shape of a bag.
Additional improvements to the process were introduced in the hands of Margaret E. Knight, who invented a machine that made paper bags with flat bottoms in 1870. Her work made her known by the name of "the mom of grocery bags."
